Exploring Technology Law: Expert Insights into the Practice

Thursday, August 20 2026, 12 to 1 p.m ET

Join the Canadian Technology Law Association's Student Engagement Committee for "Exploring Technology Law: Expert Insights into the Practice," a Q&A panel featuring experienced practitioners in the technology law field.

Whether you are a law student considering different practice areas or a young lawyer looking to break into the space, this session offers a candid look at what it really means to be a technology lawyer. Our panelists will share how they built their careers in technology law, the day-to-day realities of the practice, the skills and knowledge that matter most, and the trends shaping the field today. Bring your questions for an interactive conversation designed to help you understand the paths into technology law and what to expect once you are there.

Featuring:

Andrew Alleyne, Partner, Fasken

Andrew is a partner at Fasken and Vice-Chair of the firm's Technology Law group for the Ontario region. His practice focuses on technology-driven corporate and commercial transactions, including large-scale outsourcing, cloud and SaaS deployments, software licensing, transition services agreements, and the technology components of M&A. Andrew also advises clients on the commercialization, acquisition, and implementation of advanced technology solutions, particularly artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. His practice extends to internet and e-commerce matters, and to the legal and regulatory aspects of online gambling in Canada.

Andrew's strategic, solutions-oriented approach is informed by substantial in-house experience, including secondments with CTVglobemedia (now Bell Media) and the procurement team at TELUS.

Andrew was named "Lawyer of the Year" for Technology Law (Toronto) by Best Lawyers in 2026, and is recognized as a leading information technology lawyer by Chambers Canada, Chambers Global, the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, Best Lawyers in Canada, and the Lexology Index. He is the immediate past President of CAN-TECH Law and Chair of the ABA's Cross-Border Law and Technology Subcommittee.

Lisa Danay Wallace, Partner, WeirFoulds LLP

Lisa is a Partner in the Information Technology and Intellectual Property Group. She advises clients on technology procurement, commercial transactions, and regulatory compliance, with a focus on drafting and negotiating complex agreements and providing strategic guidance to both customers and vendors at all stages of the technology relationship - whether entering, maintaining, or exiting the arrangement. Lisa helps clients navigate the legal and commercial challenges of deploying emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. She advises on AI product development, risk allocation, governance frameworks, use of third-party data, and responsible deployment. She also supports businesses integrating AI tools - balancing innovation with regulatory, contractual, and ethical considerations.

Lisa represents both buyers and sellers of technology products and services, including SaaS providers, software developers, fintech companies, and enterprises procuring mission-critical technology. She helps tech companies structure deals that meet customer expectations while maximizing value and managing risk. An active member of the legal and technology communities, Lisa serves on the executive and Board of the Canadian Technology Law Association (CAN-TECH), is a member of the CAN TECH Women in Tech committee and Co-Chairs WeirFoulds Women Committee. She is also a leader in advancing women in law and technology.

Allan Oziel, Partner, Oziel Law

Allan founded Oziel Law in 2012 after experience in big-law private practice and as corporate counsel for a public financial institution. His practice focuses on providing a broad range of business, transactional, technology, and intellectual property law services to clients ranging from start-up ventures to growth-stage businesses.

Allan has been recognized as a top technology lawyer by Best Lawyers and was twice nominated for Top 25 Lawyers in Canada. He is also an active writer and speaker in the legal community on technology and intellectual property law.

Jacqueline Tsai, Chief Legal Officer, Paybilt

Jacqueline doesn't just advise on strategy — she shapes it. As Chief Legal Officer at Paybilt, she sits at the intersection of law, product, and growth, partnering with executive leadership to build the governance and legal infrastructure behind a company redefining payments.

Before Paybilt, Jacqueline spent a decade at Interac architecting the legal product function that powered some of Canada's most consequential fintech moments — including the launch of Apple Pay and expansion of e-Transfer. She didn't inherit a machine; she built one.

Her path to payments ran through litigation, insurance, and music IP — an unconventional route that sharpened her instincts and gave her a strategist's appetite for complexity. That foundation shaped a leadership philosophy built on practical lawyering, deep product partnership, and relationships that actually move the needle.

She joined Paybilt for the same reason she thrives: the chance to build from scratch. Scaling a function at a high-growth company isn't maintenance work — it's architecture. Jacqueline brings the same energy to mentorship, investing in the next generation of payments professionals with the transparency and authenticity she also appreciates.
